Look for a bank that specializes in the kind of loan you need. Some banks specialize in loans for specific types of businesses, whereas others lean toward home equities and mortgages. Have all the things with you that the bank will want to see when you apply for the loan.

For a personal loan, this may mean a W-2 or other proof of income or in the case of a small business, proof of financial income, statements and a business plan. Check with the prospective bank to see what is recommended for your loan.

After choosing a bank, fill out the required loan application forms. You can usually download the forms from the bank's website, or contact the bank to have them mail you the forms.

Make an appointment with a loan officer at the bank you chose. Negotiate with loan officer.

Don't be afraid to ask for what you want right out of the gate. Loan officers can then take that initial request and work from there.
